For many Jews on campus, chants of “Intifada” recalls the more recent “Second Intifada” and its widespread violence targeting Jewish civilians of Israel. Since such slogans re-emerged in a widespread way within hours of the attack of October 7, they can be and often were understood as a justification of violence against Jews. This means that for many students with connections to victims of the Second Intifada and October 7, the slogan triggers fear, trauma, and pain, and can make for a hostile environment that many experience as antisemitic.
