The Nexus Project strongly opposes an immigration judge’s new deportation order against Mohsen Mahdawi. The Trump Administration’s authoritarian efforts to subvert the First Amendment and remove lawful permanent resident status should frighten everyone who values our democratic freedoms.
The Administration’s crackdown on pro-Palestinian protesters is a direct attack on the constitutional right to political expression that our democracy was founded on. Whether one agrees with Mahdawi’s advocacy or not is immaterial — the First Amendment doesn’t discriminate based on the speaker’s political views.
The freedom to participate in democratic discourse and political activism is essential to the health of our democracy. Creating widespread fear of governmental retaliation for free speech is a key tactic of the authoritarian playbook, which we know is deeply dangerous for all vulnerable populations, including Jews. Far from “fighting antisemitism,” measures like these make our community far less safe.
The Nexus Project urges the courts and Congressional leadership to reject The Trump Administration’s shameful weaponization of immigration law against pro-Palestinian advocates.
