Nexus welcomes the Supreme Court’s rejection of President Trump’s executive order attacking birthright citizenship—one of the bedrocks of American democracy and Constitution.
Our families came to America seeking the promise of a better life — a chance to build a future for our communities and our children. That promise depended on birthright citizenship. When we say the fight to protect American democracy and keep Jews safe are intertwined, this is exactly what we’re talking about.
As Eric Ward wrote in an essay for the Nexus Projects’ Shofar Report:

President Trump has also faced little resistance in reframing birthright citizenship as a racial slur and launching a policy attack on the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) of 1965 — the very law that dismantled antisemitic immigration policies. These were the same policies that once barred Jews fleeing pogroms and the Holocaust from seeking refuge in the US. Now, those policies continue to be under attack by the Trump administration.”
As American Jews, we are relieved birthright citizenship protections will continue to be upheld, and vow to continue our work to protect the democratic institutions and civil liberties that make our pluralistic society possible.
