Universities Were Forced to Pay Up Despite Little Evidence of Antisemitism, Trump Whistleblowers Say

The Nexus Project, a Jewish watchdog group working to battle antisemitism while protecting free speech and civil rights, issued a statement saying the whistleblower report “describes a gross exploitation of Jewish Americans’ legitimate fears — using our community’s safety as a pretext to punish political opponents and gut academic freedom. That betrays the very people these investigations claimed to protect.”

Last year, The Chronicle and ProPublica reported on how the Department of Justice pressured its lawyers to “find” evidence that the University of California at Los Angeles had tolerated antisemitism, violating legal and procedural norms to create a case against the university and taking advantage of UCLA’s heavy reliance on federal grants it stood to lose.
