After House Republicans requested that three universities produce detailed documentation of their responses to allegations of antisemitic behavior on their campuses, Nexus National Director Jonathan Jacoby warned that the Trump administration was once again using antisemitism as a guise for cracking down on civil liberties. Jacoby told the San Francisco Chronicle: “I don’t think this administration cares about Jewish concerns at all. It’s manipulating Jewish fear to advance its agenda of undermining democracy — and in this case, academic freedom.” He continued: “If there’s a hate crime or a violation of regulations, then there should be consequences. But most of the time, we’re talking about college students expressing their opinions, protesting and arguing. Sometimes that makes people feel uncomfortable. But the job of a university is to help people work it out. When it makes people unsafe, the job of the university is to protect the students. I don’t think we need Congress on this issue.”
